LG Challenge 2023

Rob’s advice and creativity throughout the filming process was invaluable.
— Michael Barrett - Adviser - Leadership and Localism at Local Government Association

“The LGA’s Leadership team appointed Rob to film the LG Challenge 2023. This involved 7 main films as well as assets for social media. These were created to a very high standard and Rob’s advice and creativity throughout the filming process was invaluable to creating a set of films that conveyed the programme perfectly. Rob has a sensitive approach to diversity and equality, and ensured the films met accessibility requirements.

Beyond his role as videographer, Rob has a breadth of skills and knowledge, including a good understanding of local government having previously worked with various local councils. Rob was extremely courteous to the senior Cllrs and officers he met at every event and built strong relationships with the ten LG Challenge contestants. Throughout the LG Challenge 2023, Rob frequently went above and beyond the requirements of the programme to ensure the challenges were filmed and promoted in the best possible way.”

LG Challenge 2023: The Final

The winner of the Local Government Challenge was announced at the Local Government Association’s (LGA) annual conference in Bournemouth on Wednesday 5 July 2023. The below video summarises the contestant's journeys over the past 6 months.

Below this, you can view the videos produced for each challenge. For each, I created a master video with subtitles, an audio-described version and two social videos featuring the two captains for each challenge. I also created the animated graphic intro and outros for each video based on a 2D graphic supplied by the client.

Challenge 1: South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership

How can the South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership lead the way for flood resilience in the sub-region, and through innovation maximise the benefit for communities and businesses across all coastal economies?

Challenge 2: Cheltenham Borough Council

How do we ensure that all of our communities prosper from the Golden Valley Development?

Challenge 3: Cherwell District Council

Our contestants gathered in Cherwell District Council for their third challenge - 'Design a future model for waste services that identifies the transformation needed at Cherwell District Council to adapt to the significant changes on the horizon for waste services across the country'.

Challenge 4: Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is focused on supporting people to remain as independent as possible. They work very hard on early intervention and prevention; however, they want to go further.

Challenge 5: Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council

Town centre regeneration requires a new perspective to revitalise local economies. Research has identified that urban green infrastructure increases footfall within town and city centres, tackles climate change, protects the environment and improves health and wellbeing.

Stills

A range of stills I shot during the project, including headshots, action shots and group portraits.

AD version

Here’s an example of the audio-described version of the video for Challenge 5 - Wigan. Each piece of on-screen text is conveyed verbally via a voice-over. The video is paused at those points where text appears to allow the voiceover to play.

Intro video

LG Challenge sees ten local government officers take part in a series of real-life challenges around the country. This intro video was edited using self-recorded video clips provided to me before the project kicked off. I helped advise the client and contestants on best practices for recording this content. I also undertook various processes in post-production to improve the look and sound of the content. Click here for more information.
