Self Recorded Content

It’s easier than ever to film your own video content.

It’s a trend that was already on the rise before Covid came along and is now in full swing. Self-recorded content presents both opportunities and challenges for organisations.

One the one hand you can mobilise your workforce to create compelling content without the cost of a professional film crew. But on the other hand, audiences still expect engaging and well-crafted video content and it takes skill to plan and edit high quality self-recorded content.

I am increasingly working with clients to produce self-recorded content as a cost-effective way to supplement their higher production value videos.

How can you guarantee that what your staff film will be any good?

I’ve created a new workflow specifically to help organisations create self-recorded content:

‘How to film a video by myself’ guides:

I’ve produced a series of ‘how to film a video by myself’ guides for clients to share with staff tasked with generating self-recorded content. The guides, which can be tailored to each organisation, apply to filming on smartphones, tablets and desktop. These are shared during pre-production well before any filming takes place to give us time to troubleshoot any issues.

‘kit in a box’ self-record video solution:

I have a devised a low cost ‘kit in a box’ self-record video solution that can be posted out to staff. This is modular and customisable depending on the filming requirement. As standard, it comes with a webcam, tripod, battery-powered light and operational instructions. I guide staff through the process of setting it up via live video chat.

How to Fix badly shot footage:

Sometimes a client comes to me after they have already shot content without my involvement. In these cases, I have various tools I can employ to repair or correct footage and audio issues. This includes:

  • Up-scaling low res video files to HD and even 4K

  • Sharpening blurry footage

  • De-noising grainy footage filmed in low light

  • White balancing and colour grading

  • Cleaning up background noise

  • Compression and EQ to boost quiet audio

However it’s always better to record footage at the highest quality possible to start with, and so by working with my from the beginning clients are far less likely to encounter issues.
